Pharmacology prof to cover genetics, genomics, kidney disease

Dr. Shannon Pittman, professor and chair of family medicine, will serve as the discussion leader for the next Health Disparities Journal Club meeting, “Breaking the Prejudice Habit: Mechanisms , Timecourse and Longevity," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, in conference room D on the second floor of the student union.

Dr. Lisa Stempak, UMMC assistant professor of pathology, director of clinical pathology, section director of microbiology and serology and laboratory director at the Jackson Medical Mall, will give the Department of Pathology Grand Rounds presentation, "Tissue is the Issue: How the Pathologist Can Help the Surgeon Collect Better Specimens for Microbiology Culture," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, in classroom R354 (upper amphitheatre).

Physiology faculty pair to deliver hypertension practice talks

Dr. Frank Spradley, assistant professor of surgery, assistant professor of physiology and biophysics and director of basic science research, and Dr. Erin Taylor, instructor in physiology and biophysics, will give the Department of Physiology and Biophysics Council on Hypertension 2019 Practice Talks from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Spradley will present "Obese Hypertensive Pregnant Rats Have Reduced Placental Growth Factor While Increasing Their Levels Decreases Their Blood Pressure," while Taylor will present "Leptin Accelerates Autoimmune Disease Progression and the Development of Hypertension in an Experimental Model of Systemic Lupus Erythematous."

Carroll Professor of the Hand, chief of hand microvascular and trauma surgery in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and professor of surgery at Columbia University Medical Center, will give the J. T. Davis Hand Lecture Series presentation, “Chronic Scapholunate Instability Injury: The RASL Procedure, 25 Year Perspective,” from 6:45-8 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, in room N 318 (3A).

Crane and the Determination of Insanity" from 11-11:30 a.m. in room SOM 111; Dr. Ralph Didlake will present "Centenary College of Brandon Springs - Mississippi's First School of Medicine," from 11:30 a.m.-Noon in room SOM 111; Dr. Lucius M. Lampton will present the 17th annual Guyton Lecture, "Images of Mississippi Medicine: A Photographic History of Medicine in Mississippi," from Noon-1 p.m. in room SOM 124; and a book signing by Lampton will take place from 1-2 p.m. in room U115-03 in the Rowland Medical Library Collaborative Center.

Dr. LouAnn Woodward, UMMC vice chancellor for health affairs, is scheduled to speak at the fall faculty meeting set for noon on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Woodward will provide an update for the Medical Center and faculty with 20 years of service will be recognized. Flu shots will be available before and after the meeting from Student and Employee Health. Lunch will be available on a first-come basis.
